Loose Skin After Weight Loss? How Exion Can Help (and When It Can’t)

You did the hard part. You lost the weight. Maybe it was months of early walks, smarter meals and saying no to the second slice. Maybe it was a medical program with your GP. Either way, you should be proud. So why does it feel like your skin didn’t get the memo?

Loose skin on the tummy, arms or thighs is one of the most common things women tell us about after weight loss. It can make you feel like the finish line keeps moving. You’ve changed your body, but you still don’t feel quite like yourself in your jeans or at the pool.

Here’s an honest look at why it happens, what you can do about it at home, where Exion fits, and when it’s not the right choice. We’re The Effortless Clinic in Gungahlin, and we see Canberra women in exactly this spot every week.

Why Does Skin Stay Loose After Weight Loss?

Your skin is clever. It stretches to fit your body, held together by collagen and elastin, the proteins that give it strength and bounce.

When skin is stretched for a long time, those fibres can get tired. When the weight comes off, the skin doesn’t always spring all the way back. How much it does depends on a few things:

  • How much weight you lost and how quickly. Bigger, faster losses usually leave more loose skin.
  • How long the weight was there. Years of stretch is harder to bounce back from than months.
  • Your age and hormones. Collagen naturally drops as you get older, and it dips again around perimenopause and menopause.
  • Pregnancy. If you’ve had babies, your tummy skin has been through more than one big stretch.
  • Genetics, sun and smoking. All of these affect how firm your skin stays.

None of this is your fault. It’s just how skin works.

What You Can Do at Home First

Before you spend a cent, a few basics make a real difference to how your skin looks and feels:

  • Build muscle. Strength training fills out the space under the skin, so it looks smoother and firmer.
  • Eat enough protein. Your skin needs it to repair and rebuild, especially while you’re losing weight.
  • Drink water and protect your skin from the sun. Sun damage breaks down collagen faster.
  • Give it time. Skin can keep adjusting for many months after weight loss, so don’t rush into anything.
  • Keep your weight steady. Up-and-down swings stretch your skin again and again.

Creams can help your skin feel softer and more hydrated, but they can’t reach deep enough to tighten loose skin on their own.

Where Exion Fits In

Exion is a non-surgical skin treatment by BTL, the company behind Emsella and Emsculpt. It’s listed with the TGA. For the body, it combines radiofrequency (gentle heat) with targeted ultrasound energy.

In simple terms, it warms the deeper layers of your skin in a controlled way. That supports your body’s own collagen and hydration, which over time can help skin look firmer, smoother and fresher.

Here’s what a treatment is like at our Gungahlin clinic:

  • A session usually takes around 30 minutes per area, depending on what we’re treating.
  • You’ll feel warmth, a bit like a hot stone massage. It’s well tolerated by most women.
  • There are no needles and no cuts, with little to no downtime. Plenty of women go straight back to work or school pick-up.
  • Most women do a course of sessions a few weeks apart. Changes build gradually as your skin renews, so you’ll usually notice them over the following weeks and months.

Common areas for loose skin after weight loss include the tummy, flanks, upper arms, inner thighs and above the knees. Exion can also help with skin texture and the look of stretch marks.

Real Talk: What Exion Can and Can’t Do

We’d rather be straight with you than sell you the wrong thing.

Exion is a good fit if you have mild to moderate laxity: skin that looks a bit soft, crinkly or less firm than you’d like, and you want an improvement without surgery or time off.

Exion isn’t the right tool if you have large folds or overhanging skin after major weight loss, such as after bariatric surgery. In that case, surgery like a tummy tuck may be the only thing that removes excess skin. We’ll tell you honestly at your consult and suggest you speak to your GP about a referral.

It also won’t replace healthy habits. Exion works best on skin that’s at a steady weight, with you looking after the basics. Individual results vary.

Soft Tummy Too? Pairing Exion With Emsculpt

After weight loss, lots of women notice two things on their tummy: skin that’s loose, and muscles underneath that feel weak or soft, especially after babies.

Exion works on the skin. Emsculpt works on the muscle, building core strength and targeting stubborn fat. Some women choose to do both, so the skin and the muscle underneath are both getting attention. We’ll talk through whether that makes sense for you at your free consult. It’s not a must.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wait after weight loss before trying Exion?

It’s best when your weight has been fairly steady for a few months. That way you’re treating your skin as it really is, and any changes aren’t undone by more weight shifts.

Does Exion hurt?

Exion is well tolerated by most women. You’ll feel warmth on your skin, and the settings are adjusted to keep you comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

Most women do a course of sessions a few weeks apart. Your plan depends on the area and how much laxity you have, so we’ll map it out at your consult. Individual results vary.

Can Exion remove a lot of excess skin?

No. Exion can help mild to moderate looseness look firmer, but it doesn’t remove skin. Large folds of excess skin usually need a surgical opinion.

Is there any downtime?

Little to no downtime. You might look a bit pink for a short while after treatment, and most women carry on with their day straight away.
