Tummy Gap After Baby? What Diastasis Recti Is and What Actually Helps
You had your baby months ago. Maybe years ago. But your tummy still pokes out, even when you’re not bloated. When you sit up in bed, there’s a little ridge or dip down the middle.
You might have been told it’s “just mum tum”. It might not be. It could be diastasis recti, also called abdominal separation.
Here’s the straight version: what it is, how to check, and what actually helps busy Canberra mums get their core back.
What is diastasis recti?
Your six-pack muscles run down the front of your tummy in two strips. In the middle is a band of connective tissue that holds them together.
Pregnancy stretches that band to make room for your baby. That’s normal. For lots of women it closes up on its own in the months after birth. For some, the gap stays wider, or the band stays soft and weak.
That’s diastasis recti. It’s very common, and it’s not your fault.
Signs you might have it
- A tummy that still looks pregnant, especially later in the day
- A ridge, bulge or “dip” down the middle when you sit up
- Lower back pain or a core that feels weak or wobbly
- Pelvic floor niggles, like leaks when you laugh, sneeze or jump
That last one matters. Your core and pelvic floor work as a team. When one is struggling, the other often is too.
Step one: see a women’s health physio
Before anything else, get checked by a women’s health physio. We mean it.
A physio can measure the gap, check how well the tissue holds tension, look at your pelvic floor and give you the right exercises for your body. They’ll also tell you if you need to see your GP or a specialist. Some larger gaps, or a hernia, need medical care.
There are great women’s health physios across Canberra. If you don’t have one, ask Jacci and she’ll point you in the right direction.

Where Emsculpt fits in
Let’s be honest. Emsculpt doesn’t “fix” diastasis recti, and no machine can promise to close the gap. Anyone who says otherwise is selling you something.
What Emsculpt does is help strengthen and tone your tummy muscles. It uses BTL’s HIFEM technology to create about 20,000 muscle contractions in a 30-minute session. That’s far more than you could do with crunches, and you just lie there.
For a lot of mums, that’s the missing piece. You know you should be doing your core work. But between the school run, work and a toddler on your hip, it doesn’t always happen.
Think of Emsculpt as a boost alongside your physio program, not a replacement for it. Once your physio gives you the green light, it can help you build strength faster and feel more connected to your core again.
Don’t forget your pelvic floor
If you’ve got abdominal separation, there’s a good chance your pelvic floor took a hit too. Leaks, heaviness, or just not feeling “right” down there are all common after birth.
Emsella helps strengthen your pelvic floor while you sit fully clothed on a chair. Sessions take about 30 minutes. Lots of mums do it at the same visit as Emsculpt, so you’re working your whole core at once.

What a sensible plan looks like
- Get checked. See a women’s health physio and follow their program.
- Get cleared. Wait until your physio or GP says you’re ready for more core work. Most women wait at least six weeks after a vaginal birth and longer after a caesarean.
- Add a boost. Talk to Jacci about whether Emsculpt, Emsella or both suit you.
- Keep going. Keep up your physio exercises between sessions. That’s where the long-term results come from.
Common questions
Can Emsculpt close my diastasis?
We can’t promise that, and no one honestly can. Emsculpt helps strengthen and tone your abdominal muscles. Your physio is the right person to assess and track the gap itself.
Is it safe after a caesarean?
Only once your scar has healed and your doctor or physio has cleared you. Jacci will check this with you at your free consult.
I’m still breastfeeding. Can I have treatment?
Have a chat with Jacci first. She’ll be upfront about timing and whether a treatment suits you right now.
Does it hurt?
Emsculpt feels like a strong workout. Intense, but not painful, and the intensity is adjusted to suit you. Emsella feels like tingling and tightening. Both have little to no downtime, so you can pick up the kids straight after.
Ready to feel strong in your own body again?
You don’t have to live with a tummy that doesn’t feel like yours. Start with your physio. Then, if you want a hand getting your strength back, come and have a chat.
